The vocabulary barrier
Odds are a pricing tool doing a job they were never designed for
A decimal price compresses probability, margin and liability into one glyph. That is efficient for a trader and opaque for everyone else. Every new user has to learn a second language before they can express an opinion, and most of them decide not to.
Why this is on the radar
- Onboarding drop-off concentrated at the slip rather than at registration
- Opinion formats without prices getting mass participation
- Writing markets in full no longer carrying meaningful editorial cost
What this changes
You are measuring the wrong drop-off. The homepage is not the problem.
Plain language cuts both ways — it can disclose risk far better than a price does.
Removing the number can also remove the clearest signal of what something costs. Done carelessly, plain language makes a wager sound like a guess.
A signal without a serious counter-case is not analysis. It is enthusiasm with formatting.
Where the signal becomes a product
What would this break in your business?
A strategic exploration turns the signal into a decision: what changes for your product, business model or distribution, what deserves a test, what can be ignored and what evidence would prove the whole argument wrong.
