Prediction is becoming a format, not a checkout

Odds started as a pricing mechanism and ended up as an interface. That accident is now the biggest barrier between betting products and the audience they say they want.

Decimal odds are a compression algorithm. They pack probability, margin and liability into a single glyph, which is enormously efficient for the person managing risk and almost useless for everyone else.

That was a reasonable trade when the user arrived already fluent. It is a bad trade now, because the people arriving next did not learn the language and have no particular reason to.

The number is doing two jobs

A price is a pricing instrument and, by accident of history, a user interface. Nobody chose the second one. It happened because the board was the product, and the board was made of prices.

Separate the two jobs and something obvious appears: the pricing can stay exactly where it is, quantitative and unromantic, while the surface becomes something a person would actually say out loud.

"City to score first and win" is a claim. 2.80 is a fact about liability that the reader has to decode before they can have an opinion about it.

What replaces it

Three substitutions, roughly in order of how much they change:

  1. Claims instead of selections. The market is written as a sentence.
  2. Consequence instead of multiplier. "Risk €5 to win €14" is a decision. 2.80 is trivia.
  3. Conviction instead of stake. The user says how sure they are; the system maps that to an amount.

None of this is technically hard. Writing markets out in full used to mean paying someone to do it line by line, and that stopped being true a while ago. The barrier was never the writing.

The obvious objection

Plain language can make a wager sound like a guess. That is a real risk and it deserves a straight answer rather than a reassurance.

If you remove the number, you have to put the cost somewhere the reader can find it. A written market that hides its margin will not survive a regulator, and it will not survive a screenshot on Reddit either. The honest version of this idea shows the take more clearly than a price ever did — which is, incidentally, a marketing position nobody is currently occupying.

Why it matters more than it sounds

Every product decision downstream depends on this one. A market that reads like a post can live where posts live. A market that reads like a board can only live on a board.

That is the whole argument. The board is a place people have to travel to. The feed is where they already are.

SportsHack is an open R&D library for the ideas, interfaces and business models that could reshape sport, betting and media.

It shows how I think before the hindsight, the client language and the safe ending. Paid work applies the same discipline to your question, constraints and decisions.
