Play before watch
Participation is the entry point, not the reward for loyalty
The old sequence assumed fandom came first and participation came later. For a large share of the incoming audience it runs backwards. People hold confident opinions about competitions they have never watched end to end, formed through clips, chat and pools — and they do not experience that as a contradiction.
Why this is on the radar
- Clip consumption dominating how under-25 audiences follow competitions
- Fantasy and pick’em participation outpacing broadcast viewership growth
- Group-chat pools forming with no product support at all
What this changes
Your funnel starts somewhere you do not measure and do not own.
Acquisition is happening in formats you are not present in, months before anyone opens an app.
Shallow engagement may stay shallow. An audience that arrives through clips may never develop the attachment that makes the rest of the business work.
A signal without a serious counter-case is not analysis. It is enthusiasm with formatting.
What would this break in your business?
A strategic exploration turns the signal into a decision: what changes for your product, business model or distribution, what deserves a test, what can be ignored and what evidence would prove the whole argument wrong.
