Unbundled consumption
People consume moments; rights are still sold as seasons
Audiences consume a goal, a run, a stat line. Rights are transacted as a full season in a territory across a window, in packages designed for broadcasters. The distance between how sport is sold and how it is watched has become the opportunity.
Why this is on the radar
- Creators routinely using unlicensed footage because licensing it is impractical
- Clip-first consumption dominating discovery for younger audiences
- Rights holders actively seeking revenue outside the main package
What this changes
There is a buyer segment that never appears in your sales pipeline because there is no counter to buy at.
Anything built on clips currently rests on rights nobody has properly cleared.
Unbundling may cannibalise the premium package, and the premium buyer will ask that question first. Nobody has shown yet whether it grows the pie or splits it.
A signal without a serious counter-case is not analysis. It is enthusiasm with formatting.
Where the signal becomes a product
What would this break in your business?
A strategic exploration turns the signal into a decision: what changes for your product, business model or distribution, what deserves a test, what can be ignored and what evidence would prove the whole argument wrong.
